Not All ADA Parking Spaces Are the Same: Left vs. Right Access Aisles & Driver Functional Realities

1. The Physical Reality of Door Clearance Contortions

When adjacent vehicles park too close, door swing space is restricted, requiring significant physical effort to maneuver into or out of a vehicle. For individuals with partial leg or arm paralysis—such as those navigating stroke recovery or hemiplegia—restricted door opening clearance creates a direct physical barrier that increases fall risks or leaves individuals stranded.

2. Left vs. Right Access Aisles: Driver vs. Passenger Functionality

It is important to recognize that not all ADA-compliant parking spaces provide identical functional utility. Accessible parking stalls feature painted diagonal access aisles (striped buffer zones), but these aisles can be located on either the left side or the right side of the parking space. [1]

Functional Distinction Between Access Aisle Locations

  • Left-Side Access Aisle: Directly benefits an ADA driver, providing necessary door swing clearance and transfer space on the driver's side.
  • Right-Side Access Aisle: Directly benefits an ADA passenger, providing boarding space on the passenger side.

Each of these configuration options is relevant for different people. Some persons with functional limitations are able to drive themselves independently, while others require a caregiver or family member to drive them. [2]

3. Reversing & Parallel Parking Limitations for Drivers with Hemiplegia

A common misconception among facility planners is that a driver with a disability can simply reverse (back up) into any ADA parking space to align a right-side access aisle with their driver's door.

For example, a person with a leg amputation who retains full use of both hands and arms would likely have the functional dexterity and upper-body mobility necessary to back a vehicle safely into a parking space.

Upper Extremity Functional Restrictions

An independent driver with hemiplegia or single-arm paralysis, however, has full functional use of only one hand and arm. This significantly restricts their ability to manipulate steering controls, adjust secondary controls, and turn to monitor blind spots simultaneously while reversing a vehicle into a confined parking space.

Therefore, an ADA parking spot with an access aisle located on the right is not a functional or safe option for an independent driver with upper extremity hemiplegia. Similarly, parking configurations that require parallel parking are also inappropriate, as parallel parking demands precise reverse maneuvering into confined spaces.

4. Safety Risks: Fall Hazards & Vehicle Entrapment

When an improper access aisle placement forces a driver with mobility impairments to maneuver through a narrow, un-striped vehicle gap, the risk of severe physical injury escalates rapidly.

Attempting to squeeze through partially opened car doors while managing balance disorders or lower-limb weakness is a leading trigger for dangerous falls. In severe cases, restricted door clearance blocks access entirely, leaving disabled drivers stranded outside their vehicles in hot or harsh weather conditions without a safe path of travel.

5. Clinical Site Inspections by Licensed Occupational Therapists

Building codes and ADA Standards specify minimum dimensional measurements for parking stalls, but code compliance alone does not guarantee that a parking layout meets the functional physical requirements of specific residents or facility users. [3]

Functional Evaluation by Licensed Occupational Therapists

To ensure accessible parking installations, deeded space exchanges, and residential barrier-free routes function safely, connecting with a licensed occupational therapist for an on-site inspection provides a comprehensive clinical functional assessment to better request the HOA for the appropriate parking space.

Occupational therapists evaluate real-world biomechanics, driver vs. passenger transfer mechanics, upper and lower extremity range of motion, and assistive equipment clearances to design accessible spaces that mitigate fall risks and support independent community mobility.
